tell me what to do

A woman walks along, and a boy of about ten years of age follows, carrying a sack filled with PET bottles. The woman stops by a concrete waste bin, and the boy eagerly peers inside.

They start scavenging.

The little boy looks tired but thankful for the scraps of food that he and his mother can somehow still stomach.

I avert my eyes and look away from the scene.

Stop. Can't you make it stop?

But I know it won't. Not yet.
The time will come. But it isn't now.
I ask "When?"
Silence. I get no answer.

In the meantime, I have to live with it... With humans barely 'living' in subhuman conditions. With real faces of pain and suffering. With looks from a poor child that could rend any heart.
But what does it feel like for them - they who actually live that kind of life?
What does one who looks on from the outside do about their plight?

Should I turn a blind-eye and shut these "grace-healed" eyes? Does it make any difference if I worry about these things?

I keep repeating myself. I can go on and on...

Meanwhile, they're still scavenging. Still suffering.
Their silent screams drowned out by a world bent on self-gratification...
and by my own self-obsession.

Tell me, what would You have done?

About Me: Let me tell you what I'm not: I am not predisposed to bare my guts and soul here in the internet for the whole world to see just for the sake of it. It's just that I like writing, in the free and unstructured way that blogging provides for. I simply want to express what I think and feel. Is that too much to ask? Which leads me to my next point... I am not invulnerable, in spite of all my attempts to put on a face of cool composure, and desperately wanting I was good enough to fool myself. In short, I am not really what I seem. So, would you still take my ramblings seriously?
